Will Power leads first Grand Prix of Indianapolis IndyCar practice

Will Power set the fastest time in the first IndyCar practice session ahead of this weekend's Grand Prix of Indianapolis after usurping Graham Rahal late on

Long-time session leader Rahal regained top spot towards the end of the 75-minute session with a lap of 1m10.0699s in his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Dallara-Honda, only for Power to top that effort with his last lap of the session.

The Team Penske Dallara-Chevrolet driver dipped below the 1m10s barrier to post a best time of 1m09.8943s - a full second faster than the best time from opening practice last year - and beat Rahal by 0.1756s.

Power's team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya had led before a red flag period was caused by Helio Castroneves with 10 minutes to go, but wound up third ahead of Simon Pagenaud and Castroneves in the remaining Penske entries.

Scott Dixon was sixth for Ganassi ahead of Ed Carpenter Racing's Josef Newgarden, while Marco Andretti was the second-fastest Honda driver behind Rahal in eighth.

Sebastien Bourdais and Carlos Munoz completed the top 10.

A number of notable names propped up the timesheets.

Alex Tagliani completed a late deal to compete in the Indianapolis 500 prelude with AJ Foyt Racing and got a handful of laps on the board on his way to the 23rd-fastest time, 1.9818s off the ultimate pace.

Matt Brabham was 24th-fastest after sitting out most of the session in a troublesome start to his first IndyCar weekend.

Brabham slowed shortly after his first flying lap and stopped in the pitlane entrance as a wheelnut had worked itself loose from his left-rear tyre.

James Hinchcliffe was unable to set a time on his first competitive appearance at the venue since his horror crash in Indy 500 practice last year.
